As a die-hard White Stripes fan, I am trying super hard to care about this: Jack White’s side project The Raconteurs have announced that their new record, Consolers Of The Lonely, will be released next week. Online music rags are going ga-ga over the news because this is the first that anybody’s heard of a new Raconteurs album; the guys apparently recorded it quickly, immediately sent it to a pressing plant, and are now releasing it next Tuesday. So. . . get pumped up for that, I guess.
I’d be a lot more jazzed about this if the first Raconteurs LP hadn’t been such a letdown. Far be it from me to tell Jack White how to spend his time, but the wait between White Stripes releases has become decidedly interminable since he started this little lark with his hometown buddies (sub-Michael-Penn-level singer-songwriter Brendan Benson and the rhythm section from garage rock also-rans The Greenhornes). The results, thus far, haven’t justified the diversion of his attention from what is arguably one of the five best rock bands currently operating in the world.
Anyways, here’s a tracklist:
1. Consoler Of The Lonely
2. Salute Your Solution
3. You Don’t Understand Me
4. Old Enough
5. The Switch And The Spur
6. Hold Up
7. Top Yourself
8. Many Shades of Block
9. Five On The Five
10. Attention
11. Pull This Blanket Off
12. Rich Kid Blues
13. These Stories Will Shout
14. Carolina Dream
If White and Benson split up the songwriting as evenly as they did on their last outing, you can expect approximately half those songs to suck. And the other half probably still won’t be good enough to justify throwing down hard-earned sawbucks. The dudes are also going on tour, but I honestly don’t care enough to post the dates. I’m gonna go have a yawning fit now.
I like to see you write an article and express exactly how indifferent you are to it all.
One of those XM stations is playing a track each hour from this disc. I heard one. I think “meh” is an appropriate critique.
